Dunes

Tall sand dunes stretch along the coastline and embrace the beach like welcoming arms. Dunes are natural wonders formed by the action of the sand, the sea, and the wind. You have to see them to appreciate their beauty.

Sand dunes are created by an abundant supply of loose sand moved by the waves and the blowing wind to form hills. Stabilizing the sandy dunes are the long roots of Marram grass, which form a net which prevents significant movement.

Once the sand is stabilized, the dunes help prevent erosion to the soft sandstone shore of Prince Edward Island. The dunes are a habitat for many animals and plants because they form a natural protective barrier from storms and waves. Many have seen the Island's renowned friendly fox taking shelter here.

Please remember to help protect the dunes and wildlife. Keep vehicles on the road, walk designated paths, keep litter out of the park, respect the signs designating wildlife protection zones, and avoid bird colonies and nests.
